How it works

Digital storage is counted in powers of two: a byte holds 8 bits, and each step up multiplies by 1024 — so 1 KB is 1024 bytes, 1 MB is 1024 KB, and so on up to petabytes. (Hardware makers sometimes advertise using powers of 1000 instead, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GB on your computer — this converter uses the 1024-based units your operating system reports.) Internally, every value is converted to bits first and then divided into the target unit, so all seven fields always agree. Type into whichever unit you have — say, the 500 GB on a drive label — to see exactly how many megabytes, bytes, or bits that really is.
